I thought that for December to take a different course than writing – as a small and temporary change from the usual. Still, as beloved as writing. And I decided on HollywoodX: History, Industry, Art – From Edison to the Rise of Internet. What?! Did you think I would take C+++, Java, or Python courses? Ho-ho-ho!
This course is provided by the University of Pennsylvania – the first American university (1774). It is broadcasted by the edx.org – a great international educational platform whose fan I became because it hosts great courses, lectured by remarkable professors. HollywoodX course is taught by Peter Decherney – a film historian by training and professor of Cinema Studies and English at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a film scholar who authored Hollywood a Very Short Introduction and Hollywood’s Copyright Wars: From Edision to Internet. The course is divided into eight modules: Before Hollywood, The Studio System, Sound and the Production Code, Hollywood at War, The Blacklist and the Cold War, The New Hollywood, Home Video and Independent Film, Digital Cinema and the Internet. A series of interviews with other film scholars, film directors, writers, Academy Awards winners, etc follows it. The course approaches Hollywood in relation to new technologies, world wars, American politics, and independent film. It shows the way the film studios reacted to these challenges and what their last responses to each challenge were. Currently, I am in the ‘Interviews’ section. It is last night that I watched the first two: Bing Chen – former executive of YouTube and co-founder of Victorious, and the interview with Noah Eisenberg – New York knowledgeable film scholar who made a deep research on the Casablanca movie. I took this course on December 5th, 2021. I took this course to break from writing courses in a beautiful and useful way. I took this course to make better film reviews and analysis. The team of Prof. Decherney compiled a lot of academic material for this course. Thanks to the professor’s team and thanks to edX, I had this great privilege to benefit from so much relevant information! Review is one of different writing styles. And I like to practice my hand at writing film reviews. Film and writing are two passions that attended this online course hand in hand and smiling at each other. It is smiling that I recommend this course. And it is from all my heart that I wish you the best of luck with this course.
