The 1937 American Firm Academy Awards nominated Stuart Erwin at the Best Supporting Actor for the role of Amos. This movie tells the story of an American football game between Yale and Texas University—from here, the name of the title. Pigskin is an informal name given to American football by the fans. And it is inspired by the story behind football: in the 16th century, people were playing football with an improvised ball that was made from a pig’s bladder. When inflated, the bladder has a round shape, is light, and is durable. Nowadays, football balls are made of vulcanized rubber. The University of Yale invited the University of Texas to play a charity football game. Yale decided on the University of Texas because the latter was neither a strong nor too weak of an opponent and, as a host of the game, it wanted to win. But the University of Texas felt engaged in a fight on behalf of all small American colleges which didn’t have big budgets and many students. In this sense, it got a new coach, Wilson ‘Slug’ (Jack Haley)—and his wife Bessie (Patsy Kelly)!—and they were looking for an excellent passing ace. Bassie came across a young man, Amos Dodd (Stuart Erwin) who was working his field and who could throw watermelon barefoot and with high precision. The university enrolled him in college to play against Yale. And the football match took place in dreadful weather. The Pigskin Parade is a musical with beautiful choreography and music written by Lew Pollack and Sidney D. Mitchell. It is also entertaining with character and situations comicality. Furthermore, it was the time of broadcasted games on the radio and the time of the entertaining radio game presenters. Enjoy the movie!
